Structural Sealant


Structural silicone sealants are used in the construction industry for the bonding of glass to frames and curtain walls. High-modulus sealants are often used for structural glazing, while medium-modulus sealants are commonly used for weatherseal applications. Both types are available in a wide range of colours and can be tailored to suit the colour scheme of a building. The difference between the two is the amount of flexibility and elasticity offered by the sealant.

As well as having less flexibility, low-modulus sealants offer a reduced amount of resistance to movement. This makes them ideal for Structural Sealant applications where the joint has more movement and where the substrate is able to handle high stresses. These products also help to minimise damage to the substrate during the movement of the joint. In addition, these sealants can be used with substrates that are particularly sensitive to high stress.

Another key factor to consider when choosing a sealant is the type of material it is made from. High-modulus sealants are often designed with doors and window frame seals in mind, but they can be suitable for other applications. They are also more resistant to the effects of weather, making them a good choice for exterior application. A range of high-modulus sealants are available, with different levels of stiffness. However, it is important to balance the benefits of flexibility with the strength required to create a strong and reliable bond.

The Young’s modulus or elastic modulus is a measure of tensile elasticity. It describes the ratio between tensile stress and tensile strain. The value increases with the rate of displacement. This is why a sealant with a higher modulus will generate more stress in the joint. On the other hand, a sealant with a lower modulus will have a low rate of deformation, putting less stress on the adhesive bond line.

Other characteristics of a high-modulus silicone sealant include resistance to high applied forces and greater flexibility. These qualities make the product a good choice for sealing shower enclosures, bathrooms, kitchens, and shop fronts. However, if the sealant is used on a window frame, it will have to be matched with a suitable framing material. Most of these sealants also have fungicides added, which prevent mould growth on the sealant and ensure a smooth surface.

Finally, high-modulus sealants are also available in a range of Structural Sealant colours. This allows them to be used on different types of framing materials, such as painted aluminium, anodized aluminium, PVC-U, and glass. For these reasons, it is highly recommended to consult a professional before selecting a sealant for a particular project.
