Lithium batteries are becoming increasingly popular as a power source for bass boats, RVs, solar setups and motorized scooters. They are safer and more environmentally friendly than lead acid or lithium manganese oxide batteries.

A lithium battery is most safe when it has balanced cycles of charge and discharge. This is why it needs a Battery Management System (BMS).

Safety

With the recent news of lithium-ion batteries exploding and catching fire, the safety of energy storage systems is top of mind. Fortunately, lithium iron phosphate is the safest of all battery types in terms of thermal stability and structural integrity. That makes lithium batteries safer than lead acid and even other lithium chemistries like Lithium Polymer.

Lithium batteries are incombustible and won’t explode or catch fire under any circumstances. They’re also able to withstand harsh conditions such as freezing cold or scorching heat, making them an excellent choice for off-grid applications where the power supply is exposed to extreme weather.

Additionally, lithium batteries don’t release dangerous gases during charging or discharging. They can also withstand physical damage such as impact or puncture. LiFePO4 batteries have better temperature tolerance than lithium ion, and they can work in ambient temperatures as low as -4°F without damaging the battery or reducing its performance.

All lithium batteries are made from the same three elements: an electrolyte, an anode and a cathode. The anode and cathode are covered by a protective layer called the solid-electrolyte interphase (SEI). The SEI protects the electrodes from damage.

During Stage 1, which lasts four hours, the lithium battery is charged slowly to prevent overcharging. Once the battery reaches its full charge voltage limit, it is transferred to the next stage of charging.

Long Lifespan

However, the lifespan of a lithium iron phosphate battery depends on how it’s used and stored. Over-discharging a battery will significantly reduce its lifespan.

Environmentally Friendly

All batteries have a certain level of adverse impact on the environment. Lead-acid batteries for example contaminate the soil and cause damage to the ecosystem when they are disposed of improperly. Lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4) batteries however are a huge improvement over other lithium-ion battery chemistries. The phosphate cathode allows for a more stable chemistry and they don’t require the use of graphite like other lithium-ion batteries. These batteries also use less aluminum which is an energy intensive material.

Additionally, the phosphate cathode does not emit dangerous hydrogen or oxygen molecules during the discharging and charging process which can occur in other lithium-ion batteries. This reduces the risk of fire, explosion and damage to the surrounding environment. The lithium iron phosphate battery does not require any corrosive electrolyte so it can be safely stored in confined spaces without the risk of leakage.

Unlike lead-acid batteries, the lithium-iron phosphate battery does not contain any heavy metals or other toxic materials that are harmful to the environment. This is a result of the fact that the cathode is made out of nickel and the anode from cobalt which are both considered critical minerals. This means that the materials can be sourced more ethically and are not being mined with the use of forced or child labour which is unfortunately still common in many countries.
